IMPORTANT UPDATE

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) would like to extend its appreciation for your patience and understanding, while we continue working on the Reconstruction of the Monroe Street Bridge over WMATA & CSX tracks. As part of this project, DDOT will demolish the existing three span Monroe Street Bridge, and will construct a new three span bridge, including the associated roadway improvement. This reconstruction project is necessary to eliminate the existing bridge conditions deficiencies and increase safety for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians using the bridge.

The next phase of this project will consist of bridge demolishing utilizing cranes. This work will begin on March 10, 2018 and extend through March 23, 2018, weather permitting.

Since it is completely unsafe to perform bridge demolition when CSX and Metro trains are running, DDOT’s contractor must demolish the bridge during night hours. Demolition will begin on Saturday, March 10th between the hours of 7 AM to 7 PM. During the period of Monday, March 12th to Friday, March 23rd, demolition will take place from 12 AM to 5 AM. During these times, only one lane of traffic will be open over Monroe Street Bridge; and during lifting of existing girders, there will be a complete road closure at the bridge for 15-minute intervals. DDOT will provide detours and there will be flaggers on both sides of the bridge to direct vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians safely through the construction zone. DDOT encourages all to stay alert and obey flaggers and construction signage when traveling through this area.

Unfortunately, during the demolition phase of this project, this work can be a little noisy. We realize this may cause some inconvenience to the neighboring community, and we sincerely apologize for the noise levels. The project team is working to minimize the noise level as much as possible, and to complete the demolition phase as quickly and as safely as possible.

• The contractor worked at the north side of Monroe Street NE Bridge within the construction zone, installing overhang brackets and plywood protection in preparation for abutment seats demolition and reconstruction. The contractor also installed debris netting and removed concrete beams over WMATA in span 2. Except for single lane with flaggers used during beams removal, all traffic maintained with two open-lanes eastbound and westbound.
