IMPORTANT UPDATE

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) would like to extend its appreciation for your patience and understanding, while we continue working on the Reconstruction of the Monroe Street Bridge over WMATA & CSX tracks. As part of this project, DDOT will demolish the existing three span Monroe Street Bridge, and will construct a new three span bridge, including the associated roadway improvement. This reconstruction project is necessary to eliminate the existing bridge conditions deficiencies and increase safety for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians using the bridge.

Since it is completely unsafe to perform bridge demolition when CSX and Metro trains are running, DDOT’s contractor may be doing work during the hours of 12 AM to 5 AM. During these times when work is being done, the bridge may be closed to traffic.  Detours will be provided and there will be flaggers at the bridge to direct vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians safely through the construction zone. DDOT encourages all to stay alert and obey flaggers and construction signage.

Unfortunately, during the demolition phase of this project, this work can be a little noisy. We realize this may cause some inconvenience to the neighboring community, and we sincerely apologize for the noise levels. The project team is working to minimize the noise level as much as possible, and to complete the demolition phase as quickly and as safely as possible.

• The contractor worked at the north side of Monroe Street NE Bridge within the construction zone, cutting and lifting piers sections in phase 1. Contractor also demolished piers columns studs in preparation for reconstruction of new piers. Bridge traffic was closed during lifting and contractor posted flaggers at both ends of the bridge to maintain vehicular and pedestrian traffic. All traffic maintained with two open-lanes eastbound and westbound after lifting.

Contractor also installed anchors under the bridge in phase 2 in preparation for debris netting installation. Bridge traffic was closed during lifting and contractor posted flaggers at both ends of the bridge to maintain vehicular and pedestrian traffic. All traffic maintained with two open-lanes eastbound and westbound after lifting.

• The contractor worked at the north side of Monroe Street NE Bridge within the construction zone, demolishing abutment A-1 wall/seat and installing formwork for abutment A-2. Contractor also predrilled piers for demolition preparation. All traffic maintained with two open-lanes eastbound and westbound.

Friday Night April 13, 2018 - Monday Morning April 16, 2018 (Overnight Work 12 AM - 5 AM):

• The contractor will be working at the north side of Monroe Street NE Bridge within the construction zone, cutting and lifting west side piers sections in phase 1. One traffic lane may be closed and contractor will have flaggers at both ends of the bridge to maintain vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
